MEMORIAL WALL & REMEMBRANCE GARDEN

Early in 2004, Phillip Stokes, a St Macartan’s parishioner, met with Fr Mogg to discuss his proposal to build a Parish Memorial Wall and the development of a Remembrance Garden, to enable our parishioners to permanently honour the memory of deceased Parish Priests, Members of the Family, Relatives and Friends.

Fr Kevin approved & welcomed the proposal as a long overdue asset and selected the site of an existing memorial to include the location of the new wall.

That memorial was later destroyed by vandals and the statue of the Blessed Lady stolen, but returned a week later undamaged & re-located to the present position.

Bricks would be pre-sold and when sufficient sales were made to cover the cost of materials, construction of the wall would commence. The wall was designed by a young landscape Architect, the son of a Parish Councillor, and provided full Working Drawings & material lists.

The proposal was published in the Parish Bulletin & pre-sale of bricks offered to parishioners. This met with immediate success for between the 23rd & 31st August, twenty-three bricks were sold @ $80. The first recorded sale of two bricks was to Mrs. Jessie Clifford. When sufficient funds from the brick sales covered the cost of building materials construction commenced under the control of John Spaziani and four volunteer Parishioner Tradies.

The wall was completed, dedicated and blest with the surrounding garden declared Sacred ground on the 19th December 2004.

Relatives and friends appreciate the opportunity to “sit a-while” on the seat donated by the Macartan Club Members, to spend some time in this tranquil setting to think about the lives and pray for the souls of those no longer with us.

The Mornington Shire council was approached regarding the Interment of Ashes in a Church Garden. They informed that ashes of the deceased cannot be interred in the container received from the Funeral Director as they can only be accommodated in a Registered Cemetery. If the Ashes are emptied from the container into the earth of a maintained Memorial Garden, it is permitted. These ashes are subject to a stringent set of Rules set by the Vatican on the dignity and respect that must be shown for the deceased person.

St Macartan’s Parish prides itself in keeping & observing all directives issued by the Vatican and Shire in relation to the handling and burial of Ashes- never to be disturbed.

The cost of purchasing a brick is $120.00.

An extra cost of $50.00 is required in cash for the hole digger, on the day of the Interment of Ashes.
